I have the best birds.

Sunday morning sitting on my couch, the bird song outside was so startlingly beautiful, layered with rain and the distant whooshing of cars and the rattle of the neighbor’s dooryard project - that I had to put my book down and just listen, amazed, to that bird outdoing himself once again.

More than once I’ve been about to embark on a project, so I open my music app, and then - wait - there’s already music - live music, from these birds - and I’m the only human here to enjoy it here and now. It’s precious because of its ethereality. The most original of art.

Here’s a new piece of art I made recently. Let’s call it “Birdsong” in honor of birdsong. 24x36 acrylic on canvas

For those of you nosy about my social life, I’ve been single since I lost my fiancé 2.5 years ago - until the past few months when I had the joy of dating a beautiful man from Alaska. Turns out we’re not for each other, but I felt very lucky to be with him for a little while.

Fireweed is found in fields and forests and beside the roads in Alaska. It has medicinal and culinary uses. It’s known for its resilience. It grows where the ground has been burned - hence its name. Fireweed is recognized as a symbol of hope, of a healing shift to new beginnings.

This painting grew organically with my intuitive method, and no knowledge that this particular flower exists. When the painting was nearly complete, I went looking online for wild Alaskan flowers that it might resemble. Since I wasn’t intentionally painting fireweed, so does it actually resemble fireweed? In shape, no. In spirit? Definitely.
